Why a New Station?
The current location works great from a response perspective.
However, concerns about soil stability, building layout, apparatus bays that were too small for standard units, dated mechanical and electrical systems, and a lack of compliance with building codes and current seismic requirements made the old facility unworkable and a liability in case of a major earthquake.
Background
Station 53 is located in the Progress area near the Washington Square Mall. In addition
to responding to the District’s largest commercial development, this station serves
well-established neighborhoods in eastern Washington County and is “first-in” on
a significant volume of motor vehicle accidents on Highway 217. The station is also
home to one-half of the District’s
Hazardous Materials Team.

Project Update
June 23, 2010
Final inspection issues are nearly resolved. Move-in is scheduled for early
July.
Joining the four-person engine crew
(currently housed in temporary quarters in front of Whitford Middle School) will
be a two-person medic unit.
May 13th, 2010
Work is largely complete. Crew
move-in is scheduled for late June.

March 10th, 2010
Crews are finishing work on the building's siding and have made
significant progress towards the fire station's
completion. Station 53 is larger
than the building it replaces because of the relatively small
size of the property. The older building was too small for
today's fire apparatus and, in order to expand, designers had to
build "up." The Progress Station will house one half of
the fire District's Hazardous Materials Team and is equipped
with a high-tech training room. The building is designed
to last more than fifty years and is built to survive a
significant earthquake.

January 7th, 2010
The Progress Station is now framed and roofed. Crews are now
hard at work inside the building installing electrical fixtures,
plumbing and finishing the interior.

December 4th, 2009
The craftsman design made for some challenging
framing, but that work is finished. The current focus is the roof, so
the project should be watertight in short order. Drywall, insulation,
and finished electrical will follow.
November 9th, 2009
Station 53's second floor walls are up. Now it's on to
the roof. Depending on how much rain crews face this
month, the roof should be in place by the end of December.

October 9th, 2009
Construction crews are raising the walls at TVF&R’s new Progress
Station 53! After months of careful prep work on the land where
the old Station 53 once stood, crews are using forklifts to
frame the building wall by wall.
September 18th, 2009
Part of the foundation has been poured on both sides of the area
where the fire apparatus will park. The bays for all the
stations will be some of the last work done to ensure a quality
cure of the concrete. Framing for the station begins soon!
August 20th, 2009
The project is underway! The old station was
demolished
to make way for the new one, but its concrete walls and foundation found
new life as fill for the new Bolton Fire Station in West Linn. This is
one of many steps that will be taken to reduce the station’s
environmental impact and will hopefully earn it a LEED rating. Both
projects, plus the Willamette Station in old-town West Linn, are being
built by
CSI
Construction. Bundling the three projects with a single contractor
provided a $1.2 million savings.
While their new station is under construction, Station 53’s firefighters
and paramedics are working out of temporary quarters at Whitford Middle
School. This nearby location means the community will see very little
change in response times. TVF&R appreciates the willingness of the
Beaverton School District to make the space available.
